Izmir Car Rental

Spread across both shores of its bay, Izmir brings together the Kordon seafront, the Clock Tower and Kemeraltı Bazaar, the market streets of Karşıyaka and the old mansions of Bornova in one city; the roads to Urla, Çeşme, Foça and Ephesus also start here. With SAW Rent A Car, Izmir car rental starts when you collect your car at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport; after that you explore the city and its surroundings on your own schedule.

In Izmir the metro, the İZBAN suburban train, the trams and the bay ferries connect the main axes of the city; even so, getting from Kemeraltı to Bornova, from Karşıyaka to Balçova or from Alsancak to the vineyards of Urla often takes several changes. With a rental car, having breakfast on the Kordon in the morning, spending the afternoon in Sığacık and the evening in Foça is entirely up to your own plan. Our booking system, which has welcomed more than 50,000 guests so far, has 16 pick-up points: 15 airports and Bursa city centre.

Izmir Car Rental: Where Do You Pick Up the Car?

The online booking form has a single pick-up point for Izmir: Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB). The airport lies south of the city, in Gaziemir; you are met at the terminal exit according to your landing time, take over the car there and drive into the city yourself. The terminal, meet-and-greet and return steps are explained in detail on our Izmir airport car rental page.

There is no online pick-up point in Konak, Alsancak, Karşıyaka or Bornova. If you would like the car to be brought to your hotel or to an address you specify, send your request to our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before booking; together you clarify whether it is possible and on which conditions.

If you arrived in the city by coach or by train, you can reach the airport on the İZBAN suburban train; the line has a stop that carries the airport's name. This way you can spend the first days in the centre using public transport and pick up the car only on the day you leave the city.

Izmir District by District: Where to Go with Your Car

The Gulf of Izmir divides the city in two: Konak, Alsancak and Balçova lie on the southern shore, Karşıyaka and Bostanlı on the northern shore, and Bornova and Bayraklı to the east. Knowing this layout when you choose the district to stay in also shapes how you plan your days with the car. The list is meant as a sightseeing guide; because the traffic changes a lot with the time of day, open your route in a map app that shows live traffic before you set off.

  1. Konak and Kemeraltı: The Clock Tower, the symbol of the city, Konak Square and Kemeraltı Bazaar with historic inns such as Kızlarağası Han are here. The inside of the bazaar is largely reserved for pedestrians; the easiest option is to leave the car in one of the paid car parks nearby and walk.
  2. Agora and Kadifekale: The remains of the Agora of ancient Smyrna lie just above Kemeraltı; from Kadifekale on the hilltop you can see the whole bay. The streets climbing to the castle are narrow and steep, so drive slowly.
  3. Karataş and the Historic Elevator: Take the Historic Elevator on Mithatpaşa Street up to the hillside neighbourhood, stop for the view over the bay and stroll past the colourful houses of Dario Moreno Street.
  4. Alsancak and the Kordon: The Kordon running along the sea, the cafés of Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street and Kültürpark around the fairground offer the liveliest evenings in the city; in the late afternoon finding a parking space in this area becomes difficult.
  5. Bayraklı: The tall business towers rising on the eastern shore of the bay form the city's new business centre, while the Bayraklı Mound in the same district holds the remains of the Old Smyrna settlement.
  6. Karşıyaka and Bostanlı: The northern shore is known for its busy market street, the walking and cycling path along the seafront and its ferry piers; a car ferry also leaves from Bostanlı for the southern shore.
  7. Bornova: Known for the campus of Ege University and the old mansions left by Levantine families; the roads towards Manisa and Istanbul also pass through this district.
  8. Balçova and İnciraltı: With the cable car climbing the mountainside, its thermal facilities and the İnciraltı City Forest, these are the places to breathe in the west of the city; the road towards Urla and Çeşme also continues from here.

Before you leave the city, the driving notes below will make things easier between the two shores of the bay and on the motorways.

Driving in Izmir: Ring Road, Crossing the Bay and Parking

Notes that will help you on the city's busy axes, between the two shores of the bay and on the toll roads leaving the city:

  1. From the airport into the city: The main road heading north from Gaziemir takes you to Konak and Alsancak; if you are going to Karşıyaka, Bayraklı or Bornova, using the Izmir Ring Road is usually more comfortable than crossing the city centre.
  2. Busy hours: On weekday mornings and evenings during commuting hours the ring road, Altınyol and the coastal boulevards slow down; a map app that shows live traffic and a well-chosen departure time save you time.
  3. Parking: Around Kemeraltı, Alsancak and the Kordon it is hard to find a space at the kerb; use the paid car parks run by the municipality and private operators, and ask your hotel about its parking in advance.
  4. Car ferry: Car ferries run between Üçkuyular on the southern shore of the bay and Bostanlı on the northern shore; when travelling between Balçova and Karşıyaka they can be an alternative to the ring road. Bear in mind that queues may form at the pier at weekends.
  5. Toll motorways: The motorways towards Çeşme, Aydın and Istanbul are toll roads. Before booking, ask our customer service by WhatsApp or phone how toll charges are passed on for a rental car.
  6. Kilometres, fuel and return: The car card shows the total kilometre allowance linked to the rental period and the "Fair Fuel Policy" note. On the return day, allow for the evening traffic and the check at the terminal entrance when you set off towards the airport.

Day Trips from Izmir: Vineyards, Bays and Ancient Cities

Once you leave the city, the vineyards of Urla, the small harbours of the Aegean coast and the best-known ancient cities of Western Anatolia are places you can reach by car. Short routes fit into half a day, while for the distant ones an overnight stay is more enjoyable; check the current distance and driving time in your map app.

  • Urla: An Aegean town close to the city, with wine houses and olive groves along its vineyard road, a quiet harbour and the remains of ancient Klazomenai.
  • Çeşme and Alaçatı: The tip of the peninsula, with stone-house streets, windsurfing bays and Ilıca beach; for accommodation, beaches and driving on the peninsula see our Çeşme car rental guide.
  • Seferihisar, Sığacık and Teos: The fishing harbour of Sığacık inside its castle walls, its local market held on Sundays and the nearby ancient city of Teos make for a quiet day out.
  • Foça: The stone houses and fishing boats of Old Foça, the Siren Rocks along the shore and the winding coastal road to New Foça form the favourite route to the north.
  • Bergama: The acropolis of Pergamon, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the Asklepion, the ancient healing centre, make a full day for history lovers.
  • Ephesus and Şirince: To the south, the Ancient City of Ephesus near Selçuk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the hillside village of Şirince can be visited on the same day; arriving at the site early in the morning lets you explore before the crowds.
  • Pamukkale and Hierapolis: With its white travertines and the ancient city of Hierapolis, this UNESCO-listed site lies inland; as it is a long drive, planning it with an overnight stay is more relaxed.

If you are fitting several ancient cities into one tour, compare the total kilometres with the allowance on your car card; if you want to end the tour at an airport in the south, the return section below shows the options.

Cars that stand out in the search, depending on your Izmir plans:

  • City driving and narrow streets, automatic — Opel Corsa, Renault Clio, Citroen C3 and Renault Taliant (Economy); for these cars you must be at least 21 and have held a licence for 3 years
  • Motorways and long day trips — Renault Megane, Toyota Corolla and Peugeot 2008 (Intermediate); for these cars you must be at least 25 and have held a licence for 5 years
  • Plenty of luggage: suitcases, a pushchair or surf gear — Ford Courier, Fiat Doblo, Dacia Duster and Peugeot Expert Traveller (Compact, Minivan and SUV); for these cars you must be at least 21 and have held a licence for 2 years
  • Large family or team, 9 seats — Peugeot Expert Traveller (Minivan); for these cars you must be at least 27 and have held a licence for 7 years

Business Trips, Trade Fairs, Weekly and Monthly Rental

Izmir is one of the largest trade and industrial centres of the Aegean: trade fairs are held all year round at Fuar İzmir in Gaziemir, and meetings never stop in the business towers of Bayraklı and in the organised industrial zones around the city. The tariff changes as the rental gets longer: for 8–29 day rentals the weekly tariff applies, and for 30 days or more the monthly tariff; see our monthly car rental page for details.

If your company needs more than one car or a long-term solution, see our corporate and long-term car rental page for fleet support for companies and the option of invoicing in EUR or USD.

If you need a premium model or a car with a driver that is not in the online list, for example for a wedding, a special day or to welcome an important guest, our customer service will look at your request; the price of these services is set according to what you ask for.

Payment, Renting Without a Card and Deposit in Izmir

The payment options you can use when booking online are listed on the card of the car you choose; you decide which one suits you before confirming.

If you want to rent without using a credit card, or to pay when you collect the car, make your booking through our customer service by WhatsApp or phone; payment can be arranged by bank transfer, EFT, cash, Wise or Revolut. All the terms of this option are explained on our car rental without a credit card page.

For young drivers (21–25 years old) renting without a credit card, an additional deposit may be required — the amount varies by vehicle segment (3,000 – 8,000 TL range).

Returning at a Different Point: Ending Your Aegean Tour in Another City

In the booking form the return point is chosen independently of the pick-up point. If you are heading south along the Aegean coast, Milas-Bodrum Airport and Dalaman Airport in Muğla are among the options in the form; if you continue as far as the Mediterranean, Antalya Airport; and if you are going back to Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen and Istanbul Airport. If you are planning a few days on the peninsula, our Bodrum car rental guide will also help.

The charge for returning the car outside Izmir may vary with the route; find out the amount from our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before you confirm the booking.

The list of all points that can be used for pick-up and return is on our pick-up points page.

Izmir Car Rental — Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I pick up a rental car in Izmir?
In the online booking the pick-up point for Izmir is Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB); you are met at the terminal exit, and meet-and-greet is provided at all 16 points in the form. If you want to take over the car at your hotel or at an address in the city, ask our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before booking.
Which district is most practical to stay in when touring Izmir by car?
Alsancak and Konak stand out for those who want to explore on foot and go out in the evening, Karşıyaka and Bostanlı for those looking for the seafront and a quiet neighbourhood, and Balçova and İnciraltı for those who will often head towards Urla and Çeşme. If you are staying in the centre, ask your hotel about parking in advance.
At what age and with how many years of licence can I rent a car?
It depends on the car you choose. In the ADB search for 20–27 October 2026, the cars available at age 21 with a licence held for 2 years were Fiat Egea (manual), Fiat Fiorino and Ford Courier; for Peugeot 3008, Peugeot Expert Traveller and Peugeot 5008 the requirement was age 27 and a licence held for 7 years. The exact requirement is written on the car's booking card.
Can I rent a car in Izmir without a credit card?
Yes, through our customer service: write on WhatsApp or call 0850 304 94 30; payment can be arranged by bank transfer, EFT, cash, Wise or Revolut. On the online screen, the payment options you can use appear on the car card.
Can I leave the car I picked up in Izmir in another city?
Yes; you choose the return point separately in the form. Bodrum, Dalaman, Antalya and Istanbul airports are among the options in the form. Ask our customer service by WhatsApp or phone about the charge for this return before you confirm the booking.
Is it easy to drive from Izmir to Çeşme and Alaçatı?
Yes; the motorway towards Çeşme passes close to Urla and reaches the tip of the peninsula, and it is a toll road. On summer weekends the return traffic gets heavy; check the current driving time in your map app.
How do I get to the other shore of the bay by car?
There are two ways: you can drive around the bay via the Izmir Ring Road and Altınyol, or take the car ferry between Üçkuyular and Bostanlı. At busy times a queue may form at the ferry pier.
What determines the price of Izmir car rental?
The main factors that set the price are your chosen dates and the season, the length of the rental (weekly tariff for 8–29 days, monthly tariff for 30 days or more), the class of the car, the pick-up and return points and any extras you add. When you enter your dates in the form at the top of the page, you see the current price.
