In the Eastern Black Sea region, the places worth seeing are separated by mountain ridges and deep valleys; buses and tours to Uzungöl, Sümela or Ayder run to fixed times and most of them cover only a single spot per day. Places to See in and around Trabzon City Centre

Trabzon's historic centre is built on slopes that climb up from the coast. The stops around the bazaar can be explored on foot, but for places spread across the hills and the shore, such as Boztepe, the Atatürk Pavilion and Lake Sera, a car makes things easier. The order below is a suggestion; check how long it takes to reach each place in your navigation app before setting off.

1. Atatürk Square and Uzun Sokak: From the Meydan, the city's meeting point, Uzun Sokak and Kunduracılar Street run west; with their anchovy and pide restaurants, dessert shops and stores they are best explored on foot. Leaving the car in one of the paid car parks nearby is the most practical option.
2. Hagia Sophia: A Byzantine-era building on a terrace overlooking the sea in the west of the city; it is known for the frescoes on its walls and ceilings and for the bell tower in its garden.
3. Trabzon Castle and the Zağnos Valley: The castle walls rise between two deep valleys; the Zağnos Valley Park at the foot of the walls, with its footpaths and bridges, is a good place for a short break in the city centre.
4. Boztepe: From the tea gardens on the hill south of the city you see the coastline, the harbour and the Black Sea from a wide angle; its busiest hours are sunset and the evening.
5. Atatürk Pavilion: In Soğuksu, the white pavilion and its garden among the pine trees open their rooms, furnished with items of the period, to visitors.
6. Akçaabat: The district west of the city is known for the meatballs that carry its name and for the historic wooden houses of Ortamahalle; it is easy to reach via the coastal road.
7. Lake Sera: A small lake near Akçaabat, formed when a landslide blocked the valley; with the footpath that circles it and its cafés it offers a calm afternoon.
8. Hıdırnebi Plateau: In the hinterland of Akçaabat, it is one of the plateaus you can drive up to from the city; on misty days it is known for the view of clouds filling the valley.

Driving on the Black Sea: the Coastal Road, Valleys and the Weather

A few points you should know before getting behind the wheel in and around Trabzon:

1. Coastal road: The Black Sea Coastal Road links the city with Rize to the east and Giresun to the west; it is a dual carriageway that runs through tunnels and junctions. Traffic can build up at the city entrances and in the late afternoon.
2. Valley and plateau roads: The roads that lead inland from the coast climb along the streams; in places they narrow, the bends become tighter and the last stretches of some plateau roads are not asphalted. Slow down for oncoming vehicles and for animals walking on the road.
3. Rain and fog: Rain can fall in the region at any time of the year, and fog can set in quickly at higher altitudes. Increase your following distance on wet surfaces and switch on your headlights when visibility drops.
4. Winter conditions: In winter there is snow and ice on the higher sections. Before driving up to the plateaus, follow the road conditions from official sources; send any questions about the car's equipment to our customer service before booking.
5. Parking: The streets around the Meydan and the bazaar are narrow, so use the paid car parks. On busy plateaus such as Uzungöl and Ayder, cars may be asked to stay at the entrance of the village in the summer months; follow the local signs.
6. Mileage, fuel and return: The car card shows the total mileage allowance for the rental period and a "Fair Fuel Policy" note; check these two lines before long plateau tours. On the day of return, set off early and allow for traffic on the coastal road to the airport.

Day Trips from Trabzon: Sümela, Uzungöl, Ayder and Rize

The best-known stops of the Eastern Black Sea are within driving range of Trabzon. Some can be seen in half a day, others are more relaxed with an overnight stay; check the route and the driving time in your map app before you set off.

• Sümela Monastery and the Altındere Valley: The monastery is built on the face of a steep cliff in the national park valley reached via Maçka. Follow official announcements for visiting hours and the parking arrangements in the valley.
• Uzungöl: Wooden houses and a mosque lined up on the shore of a lake surrounded by pine forests in Çaykara; as it is busy in the summer months and at weekends, arriving early in the morning is more enjoyable.
• Ayder Plateau: A plateau in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, known for its waterfalls, wooden guesthouses and thermal spring; the roads that continue to the higher Huser and Pokut plateaus become narrow.
• Fırtına Valley and Zilkale: Around Çamlıhemşin, before you turn onto the Ayder road, you will see stone arch bridges lined up along the stream and Zilkale on a hill overlooking the valley.

• Hamsiköy and Zigana: Hamsiköy, on the road that climbs from Maçka towards Gümüşhane, is famous for its rice pudding; you can continue the drive with the forest and plateau scenery of Zigana.
• Karaca Cave: The cave in the Torul district of Gümüşhane, with its stalactites and stalagmites, is a stop further along the Zigana road; check the visiting days in advance.
