Routes from OGU: Boztepe, Giresun Island, the Plateaus and the Coastal Road

The airport lies between Ordu and Giresun, right on the coastal road: the road west reaches Samsun via Perşembe and Ünye, the road east reaches Trabzon via Giresun and Tirebolu, and the narrow roads that turn off inland climb up to the highland plateaus. The suggestions are meant to help your planning; check the weather and road conditions on the plateau roads before setting off.

1. Boztepe and central Ordu: You can go up to Boztepe above the city by cable car or by car; from the hilltop the Ordu shoreline and the Black Sea are seen from a wide angle. Down below, the seaside park and the historic Taşbaşı quarter are well suited to a short walk.
2. Giresun Castle and Giresun Island: The view from the castle in the city centre over the harbour and the island offshore is Giresun's best-known image; the island can easily be watched from the shore.
3. Perşembe and Cape Yason: Reaching into the sea west of Ordu, Cape Yason with its small church and lighthouse is a calm stop for a short break; along the coast you can also call in at the fishing shelters.
4. Çambaşı Plateau: The road climbing from the Kabadüz direction leads to cool meadows in summer and to a wide plateau covered in snow in winter; the road is narrow and winding, so drive without hurrying.
5. Kümbet and Bektaş plateaus: South of Giresun and reached via Dereli, these plateaus are known for their summer festivities and wooden highland houses; take a thick extra layer of clothing for the cool evenings.
6. Gölköy and Ulugöl: Ulugöl in the interior of Ordu is a quiet lake surrounded by pine forest; it is a good route for anyone who wants to spend a day away from the crowds on the coast.

Driving on the Black Sea: Rain, Fog and Plateau Bends

In the Eastern Black Sea region rain can fall in every season of the year, and fog can close in suddenly on the roads that climb to the plateaus. Slow down on wet surfaces, leave more room to the car ahead on bends and keep your headlights on during the day as well.
