There are plenty of public transport options in the capital; but if on the same day you are going back and forth between a public institution in Kızılay, a business tower in Balgat and dinner on Tunalı Hilmi in the evening, or you are keeping the weekend for Beypazarı or Hattuşa, a rental car frees your plans from timetables. SAW Rent A Car's booking system has served more than 50,000 guests so far; cars are handed over at 16 points, namely 15 airports and Bursa city centre.

Ankara Car Rental: Where Do You Collect the Car?

In the online booking form, the point for Ankara is listed as Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB); you are met at the terminal exit according to your landing time and collect the car there. A step-by-step description of the meet-and-greet and the handover is on our Esenboğa Airport car rental page, and a short summary of the point is on the ESB pick-up point page.

If you would like to pick up or return in central Ankara, contact our customer service (WhatsApp/phone); depending on your request, we will direct you to our partner's city office.

City-centre pick-up and return are not listed in the online form, so please send your request before booking. With online bookings the car is handed over at the point you choose in the form and returned to the same point.

Ankara District by District: Places to Drive To

Ankara is a large city: the old centre, Ulus, lies to the north, the ministries and shopping streets are around Kızılay, while residential and business districts stretch south and west. You can fit the districts below into a one- or two-day plan; driving time changes with the hour and the traffic, so check your route in your map app.

  1. Ulus and Ankara Castle: The historic core of the city; the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations at the foot of the castle and the old market lanes around it deserve half a day. In the steep, narrow streets it is easier to leave the car in a nearby car park and walk.
  2. Hamamönü: A small neighbourhood next to Ulus, explored on foot, with restored Ankara houses, cafés and handicraft shops.
  3. Anıtkabir: Atatürk's mausoleum and its museum stand inside a large park in Anıttepe; set aside a few hours in your plan for the visit.
  4. Kızılay and Kocatepe: The commercial heart of the city, home to Kocatepe Mosque, Güvenpark and the pedestrian streets of Sakarya Avenue. Kerbside parking is scarce, so choose a multi-storey car park.
  5. Kavaklıdere, Tunalı Hilmi and Kuğulu Park: An avenue known for its shops, cafés and evening life; Kuğulu Park is a pleasant stop for a short break.
  6. Çankaya and Atakule: A district spread over the hills in the south of the city; Atakule offers a view over Ankara, and embassy buildings line the Gaziosmanpaşa side.
  7. METU Forest and Lake Eymir: The wooded area of the university campus and the walking and cycling path around the lake are the address for anyone who wants an escape into nature within the city.
  8. Gölbaşı and Lake Mogan: A district at the southern exit; the parks and restaurants on the lakeshore are a popular choice for a weekend lunch.

Driving in the Capital: Traffic, Parking and Motorways

Ankara's wide boulevards make driving in the city easier; still, here are a few practical points that will help on your first day:

  1. Parking: Finding kerbside space around Kızılay, Ulus and Tunalı Hilmi is difficult; the paid areas of shopping centres and multi-storey car parks save time.
  2. Busy hours: On weekdays, Eskişehir Road, Konya Road and Istanbul Road get busy in the morning commute and at the end of the working day in the evening; leave some margin before your meeting.
  3. Motorways: The Anatolian Motorway towards Istanbul and the Ankara–Niğde Motorway to the south are toll roads (tariff of the General Directorate of Highways). Ask how the toll is paid when you collect the car.
  4. Winter: In the winter months, falling snow and icing in the morning hours can make roads slippery; check the weather and road conditions before you leave the city.
  5. Mileage and fuel: The total km limit, set according to the rental period, and the fuel policy are written on the car card; if you plan long day trips, read the card with that in mind.
  6. Return: If you are returning the car to Esenboğa, set off early and allow for city traffic and the security check at the terminal entrance.

Day Trips from Ankara

The capital is a crossroads that opens onto the history and nature routes of Central Anatolia. Some of the places below can be visited by car and back on the same day, while others are more comfortable with an overnight stay; check the current distance and driving time in your map app.

  • Beypazarı: This district to the west is known for its Ottoman mansions with bay windows, its historic bazaar and its local flavours; it gets crowded at weekends.
  • Kızılcahamam and Soğuksu National Park: A short escape from the city with pine forests, walking trails and thermal facilities to the north-west.
  • Gordion: The Phrygian capital near Polatlı; with its great tumulus and its museum it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • Hattuşa: The capital of the Hittite Empire in the Boğazkale district of Çorum; the Lion Gate and the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Lake Tuz: Türkiye's second largest lake; at the end of summer, when the water recedes, you can walk on the white salt surface.
  • Eskişehir: A city with student energy, the colourful wooden houses of Odunpazarı, the banks of the Porsuk River and its museums.
  • Cappadocia: For the fairy chimneys and rock churches around Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar, going with an overnight stay makes the plan more relaxed.

On long routes, check the km limit and the driver requirement on your car card; if you will end the journey in another city, see the return section below.

Ankara Car Rental for Business Trips and Longer Stays

For people coming to Ankara on business, the schedule often spreads over several districts: ministries and public institutions lie between Kızılay and Çankaya, business towers are in Söğütözü, Balgat and Çukurambar, universities and Ankara Bilkent City Hospital are along Eskişehir Road, and industrial estates are around OSTİM and İvedik. If you are going back and forth between these addresses on the same day, your own car saves time.

If your meetings run longer, you can ask to extend the rental by writing to our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before the return time; availability and price for the new date are checked together. For your company's regular or long-term car needs see our corporate and long-term car rental page, and for stays of a few weeks our monthly car rental page.

If you need a premium car or a chauffeur service, these options do not appear in the online list; send your request to our customer service and it is arranged on request. Details are on our car rental with driver page.

Paying Without a Credit Card and the Deposit

When you book on our website the payment option is shown on screen; in the ESB search of 30 September 2026 the option for all 19 cars was "Pay Now".

If you have no credit card, or you want to pay when you collect the car, create the booking with our customer service by WhatsApp or phone; the payment method and the deposit are settled in that conversation.

The deposit amount varies by car and is written on the car card. For details of renting without a card, read our car rental without a credit card page.

From Ankara to Another City: Returning at a Different Point

If you will continue from the capital to Istanbul or to the Mediterranean coast, you can collect the car at ESB and leave it at the Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) or Antalya Airport (AYT) points in the booking form, or at another point in the form if you prefer.

Settle the fee for returning at a different point by asking our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before you complete the booking.

You can see all pick-up and return points in our list of pick-up points.

Ankara Car Rental — Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I collect the car in Ankara?
In an online booking the pick-up point is Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB); you are met at the terminal exit. SAW Rent A Car offers a meet-and-greet at all 16 points in the booking form. If you would like to collect the car in the city centre, ask our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before booking.
Is it hard to drive within Ankara?
The wide boulevards make driving easier; the difficulty is mostly finding a parking space around Kızılay, Ulus and Tunalı Hilmi. Using multi-storey car parks and leaving a margin for Eskişehir Road and Konya Road in the evening rush hour makes things easier.
At what age and with how many years of licence can I rent a car?
It depends on the car you choose. In the ESB search of 30 September 2026 the cars that could be rented at 21 with a 2-year licence were Fiat Egea (manual), Fiat Fiorino and Ford Courier; for Peugeot 3008, Peugeot Expert Traveller and Peugeot 5008 the requirement was age 27 and a 7-year licence. The exact requirement is written on the car's booking card.
Can I rent a car in Ankara without a credit card?
Yes, through our customer service. On the online screen payment is made with "Pay Now"; to rent without a card or to pay at the car, write to us on WhatsApp or call 0850 304 94 30.
Which car suits a trip to Hattuşa or Cappadocia?
On long drives, boot space and comfort matter most: in the ESB search the SUV class listed Hyundai Bayon, Dacia Duster, Peugeot 3008, Hyundai Tucson and Peugeot 5008, and the minivan class listed Fiat Doblo and Peugeot Expert Traveller. Check the km limit and the driver requirement on the car card.
Can I leave the car in Istanbul or Antalya?
Yes. In the form you can choose Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) or Antalya Airport (AYT) as the return point. Settle the return fee by asking our customer service by WhatsApp or phone before booking.
Can I rent a car just for the weekend?
Choose the pick-up and return dates in the form to match your weekend and run a search; the cars shown in the results can be rented for those dates. Routes such as Beypazarı, Kızılcahamam or Gordion can then be explored by car without depending on timetables.
What determines the price of Ankara car rental?
The date and season, the rental period, the car class, returning at a different point and any extras you add. The current price for your own dates appears in the form at the top of the page.
